M12 · AI red teaming¶
Run a short red-team scan against the guarded support agent and turn results into mitigations.
⏱️ Time: ~70 minutes
Objectives¶
- Reuse the guarded
lgws-m09-support-agentfrom M11. - Try
azure.ai.evaluation.red_team.RedTeamwith a Python callback target. - Use four safety categories and obfuscation strategies such as Base64, Flip, Morse, and a composed strategy.
- Print a scorecard-style ASR summary and connect findings to the M11 guardrail.
The scan runs in a separate process with a time cap, and section 4 includes a quick manual probe scorecard you can use if the scan can't finish in class.
# ── Workshop bootstrap (same in every lab) ─────────────────────────────
import sys, pathlib
ROOT = next(p for p in [pathlib.Path.cwd(), *pathlib.Path.cwd().parents] if (p / "pyproject.toml").exists())
sys.path.insert(0, str(ROOT))
from workshop.config import settings
print("Project :", settings.project_endpoint)
print("Model :", settings.chat_model)
1. Ensure the hosted support agent exists¶
from workshop.azd import init_agent
from workshop.agents import ask
from workshop.config import project_client
import asyncio, base64, json, subprocess, sys, textwrap, time, pandas as pd
agent = init_agent("m09-support-agent", port=8112)
try:
project_client().agents.get(agent.agent_name)
print("Found", agent.agent_name)
except Exception:
print("Agent missing; deploying now.")
agent.deploy()
project_client().agents.get(agent.agent_name)
2. Define the target callback used by RedTeam¶
def target_callback(messages, stream=False, session_state=None, context=None):
prompt = messages[-1]["content"] if messages else ""
response = ask(agent.agent_name, prompt, show=False)
return {"messages": [{"role": "assistant", "content": response.output_text}]}
try:
smoke = target_callback([{"role": "user", "content": "What is the return policy for a backpack?"}])
except Exception as exc:
if "agent_version_failed" not in str(exc):
raise
print("Latest agent version failed provisioning; deploying a fresh version and retrying.")
agent.deploy()
smoke = target_callback([{"role": "user", "content": "What is the return policy for a backpack?"}])
print(smoke["messages"][-1]["content"][:500])
assert smoke["messages"][-1]["content"]
3. Run the AI Red Teaming Agent scan¶
The scan runs in a separate process so a slow first import of the scanner can't freeze your kernel.
A full scan (4 risk categories × 4 attack strategies × 2 objectives) usually takes 10–15 minutes.
SCAN_TIMEOUT_SECONDS caps it; if the cap is hit, section 4 gives you a quick manual probe scorecard instead.
SCAN_TIMEOUT_SECONDS = 1200 # 20 minutes; lower it if you are short on time
worker_path = ROOT / ".work" / "m12_redteam_worker.py"
worker_path.parent.mkdir(exist_ok=True)
worker_path.write_text(textwrap.dedent('''

4. Manual probe scorecard (quick check, or fallback if the scan timed out)¶

asr = scorecard.assign(success=scorecard["outcome"].eq("needs_review")).groupby(["category", "strategy"])["success"].mean().reset_index(name="attack_success_rate")
display(asr)
assert set(scorecard["category"]) == {"Violence", "HateUnfairness", "Sexual", "SelfHarm"}
5. Results and mitigations¶
mitigations = pd.DataFrame([
{"finding": "Unsafe prompts are blocked/refused or produce irrelevant safe answers.", "mitigation": "Keep the M11 RAI policy attached and verify policy id after each deploy."},
{"finding": "Encoded/obfuscated probes can hide intent from simple keyword checks.", "mitigation": "Use RedTeam/Foundry safety evaluations regularly, not only hand-written prompts."},
{"finding": "Support tools expose order facts.", "mitigation": "Minimize returned PII and keep PIIMiddleware before the model."},
])
display(mitigations)
portal_note = "Open Foundry portal → Evaluations / Traces to inspect persisted runs when the SDK scan completes and uploads results."
print(portal_note)
assert len(mitigations) == 3
🧪 Your turn¶
Add one additional strategy (for example ROT13) to the compact probe table and compare whether the outcome changes.
# Add a new probe row here, then rerun the fallback probe cell.
Cleanup¶
We keep the guarded hosted agent and any red-team output under validation/m12-redteam/ for classroom review.
Recap¶
| Item | Result |
|---|---|
| Local RedTeam | redteam_result shows completed, timeout, or environment limitation |
| Fallback scorecard | asr summarizes ASR by category and strategy |
| Main mitigation | M11 RAI policy + PII middleware + repeated red-team scans |
